I am thankful for the volunteers at BC; good morning to all. Everything was fine last night, but this morning no Word/Excel Starter 2010 docs will open. The popup reads: 'Microsoft Word Starter cannot be opened. Try again or repair the product in Control Panel.'

I did this Change/Repair from Control Panel and got this message: 'Repair Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Repairing Microsoft Office Starter 2010 - English was unsuccessful because an internet connection is required. Ensure your computer can access the internet and try again.' I think it's obvious I do have internet access because I'm submitting this topic, but apparently MSFT Office doesn't know this. I opened Click-to-Run Application Manager at the Control Panel and got the same error message as above. Snip attached.

I restarted and attempted the Change/Repair from the Control Panel with the same results. From glancing in Microsoft Community concerning this, I see that those for whom the repair would not work were encouraged to uninstall Microsoft Word Starter 2010 at Control Panel, then go to Start>Programs>Microsoft Office 2010>click 'use', click 'open', then reinstall Office Starter 2010.however, each said this didn't work as there is no 'use' option available, plus there's an error that Click-to-Run Application Manager won't function. I tried to do System Restore back to 11/7/2015, but I'm still getting the same 'unable to successfully restore error 0x80070005' that we attempted to deal with in this topic,. I am still unable to do a system restore from a restore point. Snip attached. Right now, however, I truly need access to my Word and Excel docs. Thank you for your help.

I considered that but just too hesitant because I have no way to do a system restore if things get worse. It's my understanding that Office 2010 is no longer available as a download, so I'd never get back to Office Starter 2010 if I uninstalled Microsoft Office 2010. There's recommendations for this good explanation and instruction at hp:, but there again, if it causes problems, I have no way to do a system restore. It seems like Office Starter 2010 took leave of its senses as a virtual program at Q. For anyone who is interested, and I don't really know how it came about, but Office Starter 2010 is now working, AND the Windows Update system seems to be fixed, AND I actually was able to do a system restore back to a 10/30/15 manually-created system restore point without getting an error!

I just kept working at it. I'd go to Control Panel>Office Starter 2010-English>click Change (which means repair), and then get the error to try again; then I'd get the error that Click to Run Application Manager didn't even have an internet connection. I would restart and try it all again. I did sfc /scannow and everything was fine. I tried several more times to do a system restore back to 11/7 and still got the error 0x80070005.

OfficeAdRemover - Disable Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Advertisements Recently I bought a new PC with preinstalled Office 2010 Starter and I found that it has.

Went to Services>Volume Shadow Service and started it. Restart laptop. Try again to do a system restore; same error. Went to Control Panel>Microsoft Office Starter 2010-English and this time I checked the box to NOT preserve any system settings, and the message then read: The Internet Connection required to perform a complete repair of Microsoft Office Starter 2010-English could not be found, a quick repair was performed while offline. If your problem persists, connect to the Internet and retry repairing. Then I checked to make sure Volume Shadow Copy service was still started,I disabled EAM protections, and this time attempted a system restore to a 10/30/15 manually done system restore point.

Lo and behold, when it restarted after the restore, there was NO error! I went to a Word doc, clicked Open, and it took a few seconds, but it started to come up and then some notices about 'accept these terms' and options for updates (I was actually thinking they were trying to slip Windows 10 in on me), I went to Start menu to look at All Programs, and lo and behold, the gold triangle with the exclamation point inside it was on the Shut Down button!that notice had not shown up there in many months. So I installed today's updates, restarted, and just reporting that Office Starter 2010 is working again, Windows Updates seem to be working again, and system restore may even be working again. What a blessing. However, the very next morning, November 11th, Microsoft Office Starter 2010-English would again NOT open; no fixes worked; I even uninstalled Office Starter 2010 at the Control Panel.

This was even worse however - contrary to what Microsoft Community answers say, after uninstalling Office Starter 2010, there is NO option for 'use' or 'open' Word Starter at Microsoft Office 2010 - there is only buy outright or try free for 30 days, and I doubt that even applies anymore. Fortunately, I found my Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 original CD with one installation left on it; installed it and because of compatibility I guess, I now have access to the 4 years of Office Starter Word docs. I would have lost acess to all that work had I not been able to install a paid version of Office 2007. Phooey on Microsoft and its corny, mostly unworkable Community answers. For the future, should this problem re-occur, you could try installing Libre Office, a free office suite you can get from here - It is capable of opening.DOC,.DOCX,.XLS and.XLSX files and most other MS Office files.

It has its own native file format but you can export back to MS Office type files. There are occasional formatting problems across the file types but these are getting fewer. Worth a look. Chris Cosgrove Thank you kindly for this information Chris. I appreciate your taking the time to inform me. It's amazing that literally hours of research online did not produce this information or even a hint of it. The old saying, 'ignorance is bliss' could not be farther from the truth.

Greetings jackiemarie and all of you at BC. I have lurked this site for many years but have never posted. I know I should probably start a new thread for this, but I am thinking it is probably not worth the effort, since there doesn't seem to be a solution to this issue. I have a client that has the exact same problem.

In fact, this has happened with a few clients. And the solution for most of them was to install AbiWord or Libre and be done with MS altogether.

However, this current client really wants his program to work again and with all the collateral issues I think it would be better for all involved, especially me. To see if there is actually a fix for this problem. So, same set of problems, an update apparently didn't finish and the stupid 'repair' program doesn't see the internet connection. Trials Fusion Keygen Software.

I un-installed the starter program and now the click to install program doesn't offer to install the Starter version. Most annoying. Considering how many times I have run into this.I would not be surprised if this is some gimmick from Microsft to get all the 'Starter' users to purchase Office. I too have researched this exhaustively. So this is my last hurrah so to speak. Any ideas from the community would be appreciated, but please don't assume I am a newbie and ask me to start at square one.

I have outlined the issue, it's the same as jackiemarie's. Oh, one last thing, It did at one time, resume working just like jackiemaries's, then another update took it out again. I have turned off the updates at this time. Not that that would amount to anything since I have un-installed the Starter anyway.

Barring a full re-image to factory settings, is there anyway to get this thing to work again? Many many thanks and best of the holidays to you all. Sincerely Randall •. Good day Randall, As you can tell, this Business Application forum isn't widely followed. Having so little technical knowledge, I have no suggestions - unless like me, someone has a paid for, earlier version of Windows Office they can install. For me, every Word document on this laptop immediately converted to Word 2007; I've had no problems, just the slowness/lack of features in 2007.

Also, I attempted to upgrade this HP laptop to Pro using the pre-installed link. Microsoft no longer allows anything but upgrading to Windows 10, from any source.everything MSFT has one path and it leads to W10, period. Rather predatory in my estimation. Anyway, the point is, it seems MSFT has no intention of pursuing answers/workable solutions to products other than W10.

If you come across a solution, please post back to let me know. Be blessed in 2016. Good day VBarnett, I do understand your frustration; MS really botched things up for those of us who just used Office Starter 2010 last year when this mess came up. Had it not been for an old Office Suite 2007 CD that I had, it would have been disastrous.

In post #6, Moderator Chris Cosgrove does say that www.libreoffice.org can interface with Office docs. You might give it a try. Chris is top-notch and won't steer you in a wrong direction. (Some of the forums don't permit attachments.) We're in for some wind and rain shortly here in my neck of the woods, so probably won't be back online for a time. BTW, what a terrific hat! Let us know what you come up with. To VBarnett: I hope my experience can help you!

Two days ago I had a situation where the Q drive for the Office Starter 2010 Click-to-run got deleted, although it's supposed to be protected! ** That made the Office Starter 'unable to open'. I'm one of those stubborn folks who really likes and wants to keep the Starter, which I've been using for years as a pre-install. I use this almost daily and have a ton of docx documents, and frequently use the program's image editing function as well. There was no Repair option in the programs list, just Uninstall, and googling for help led to everyone basically saying uninstall, nothing you can do, etc. I tried the System Restore, in which all my points but the one most recent had now disappeared by the way, but no luck there.

However- I got my Office Starter back! Since I hadn't uninstalled, the program files remained and I began poking around, looking for.exe files. By dumb luck and some educated guessing I was fairly quickly successful. Here is what I did: Start menu>Computer>Program Data>Microsoft>OEM Office 14>OStarter>en.us>Click to run64.msi>SetupConsumerC2R.exe>REPAIR... I clicked Repair. A dialog box appeared that said 'Microsoft is downloading the required features'.

The Q drive Click-to-run was not recovered, but that didn't seem to make a difference because the Starter was functioning fine in creating, editing, saving, and opening documents again. I did notice a chunk of fonts missing though, and today repeated the process to see if I could recover the missing fonts, not showing in the fonts install-delete page. Success there as well, although only about half were recovered. In addition, this second go-around did recover the Q drive............. ** How I managed to delete the Click-to-run protected Q drive: Windows Update was stalled forever at '0% downloaded', etc, like it does, and I noticed noise from the DVD optical drive, in which I had forgotten to remove a DVD. I clicked 'Cancel' but the no-downloading process kept on hanging, with the disc apparently spinning endlessly, so I manually opened the DVD drive tray to take it out.

Not the thing to do! That deleted the disc drive from 'Computer' and the Device Manager! AND deleted the Click-to-run Q drive as well.

Later I decided to try to play a disc to see what would happen. Amazingly, just opening the tray manually again recovered that drive info to the machine..

But not the Q drive. Why the Click-to-run/Starter was tangled up with the optical drive being deleted--haven't a clue................ My laptop: Windows 7-64 Pro, Lenovo T420 Thinkpad, Office Starter 2010 Edited by ktz2, 15 October 2016 - 01:40 AM. After the comments by Jackiemarie #11 I will have to get a bigger hat! To point up the flexibility of Libre Office, I have an old laptop which has Linux Mint installed as its OS and Libre office is the installed office suite.

I had a few free minutes the other week and we were discussing PowerPoint. I had a PP presentation on a memory stick which was generated in PowerPoint 2003 on a Win 7 computer and just out of curiosity tried opening it on the Linux laptop.

It opened the file without any problem and, to my surprise, actually ran the presentation. Perhaps slowly, but I put that down to the age and lack of 'grunt' on that laptop. Chris Cosgrove. Good to know of the capabilities of Libre Office. I've been aware of the program and other alternatives to Word and it's good to know they exist. Someday I will likely be forced to adopt one of them.

For a short time I had a Windows 10 machine as my 2nd (I hated W 10 so much I sold the laptop after 2 months); it was minus the Word Starter of course, so I tried the MS Office Online free thing. Microsoft is like a dog with a bone in trying to force everyone away from Win 7 and into Win 10, despite the fact that so many wouldn't take it even when they were giving it away free! To that end, some IT folks are saying that MS has been intentionally sabotaging Win 7--ex: the Windows Updates mess and more. The Starter is part of that, which is why it can no longer be installed from a link or the stored usb portable program, and why it is deteriorating randomly for some users. I have another Win 7 machine, apart from the above-referenced laptop in the thread, that one has the Starter installed from a link, after it came back from warranty service in 2013 with factory settings -minus the pre-installed Starter. If it gets broken, that's the end of it.

I would guess that when Win 7 support ends in 3+ years, things will go downhill quickly. I'll be getting a Linux OS then, because: Windows 10- never. Edited by ktz2, 22 October 2016 - 08:27 PM. First of all, my apologies for jumping on board this crazy train and hijacking this thread. I have, well, my mother in law is having, this very issue.except with a twist. At my house I can open a Word file and do what I need to do with it. At her house, however, when she tries to open the file (that was created at my house, under her login on her Windows 10 laptop), she is getting the error referenced in the original post.

While I am not 100% certain, uninstalling and reinstalling or repairing the application will solve the issue, the fact that it works as expected at my house but not at hers leads me to believe that is not the complete issue. Anyone out there have any insight on this little conundrum of mine? Thanks in advance.

My MS Office 2007 is installed in the x86 library. I hope that is the same on your system for Office 2010. Reason I mention that is that free Revo can only uninstall from the x86 library.

To uninstall from the x64 library, they want you to buy their Pro version. Nothing is ever simple. Should your Office be in the x64 library, you have to use what Brink posted. But check that first by opening your C: partition.

The x64 library is just called 'Program Files' versus 'Program Files x86' for the one that works. Look for 'Microsoft Office'.
