Jul 14, 2011 PRS American made guitar serial number question. He said American made PRS guitars have a hand written serial number. Search this Thread. PRS serial numbers are very easy to figure out. The only slightly confusing thing is 1985 guitars start with the same number as a 1995 guitar. 1986 guitars start with the same number as a 1996 guitar 1987 guitars start with the same number as a.

Greetings and Hello, I've been trying to identify the date of an early PRS CE 24 model serial number 173172. I've done my research and have come up with the fact that it is either a 1991 or 1992. I've used the PRS site and another, and have found conflicting data. If anyone knows the PRS dating system very well I could really use a hand finding out exactly when this guitar was built. The original owner agrees as well that we are in the right ball park (91 or 92).

Another question I'd like to to know about early PRS guitars is, does anyone know when they switched over from Brazilian Rosewood to Indian Rosewood fretboards? I'm not totally sure when but I read it was somewhere in 1991.

If anyone could help out on either of these questions that would be a great help. Thank you so much.

John C I think you're right. The way you've broken it down seems correct. According to the PRS web site you start with the prefix which we did - 1. That leads us to the year 1991 according to the 'Serial Number Year-Code Prefix' via PRSguitars.com. The next numeral in the SN, 7, then indicates CE - we're right on there. Then we are left with '3172.' When you match up the 3172 to the CE Models Approximate Serial Numbers list on PRSguitars. Curso Vaughan Rapidshare Files. com, it has the guitar listed as being built in 1990 - this to me is where they threw us the curveball.

In 1990 the Serial numbers for CE Models were 1831-3200. I think it's safe to say that this guitar was the 3,172 CE built in 1990. If it's not 1990, then my next guess would have to be 1991. Thanks for your help John C, and let me know what you think. John C I think you're right. The way you've broken it down seems correct.
