I know this is valid information at least as far back as 76 (oldest MPL I have), and i believe several years previous. There is a plastic sleeve that slides into the visor before the rod is inserted, You remove the screw, pull the visor support (rod) out of the visor, then pull out the sleeve and install a new one.
I see them on e*bay all the time for other GM brands. Last part number I could find is 8740843. We used to sell a bunch of them in my dealerships days. I m fairly certain the same part number fit all GM cars and trucks.
